Union Square Association Baltimore Release:

bloom-block-2BALTIMORE, MD- Historic Union Square is hosting its 5th annual Bloom Your Block competition. Starting on May 2nd, Union Square residents will be adorning their windowsills, stoops and sidewalks with beautiful blooming potted plants, shrubs, and sidewalk and window art. June 27th will be the culminating event starting with judging of the Best Block and Best Home and photos from 10am to 2pm. A Bloom Your Block celebration and pie contest will occur from 12pm-2pm, in Union Square Park, at the corner of the 1500 block of W. Lombard Street and Stricker Street.

Bloom Your Block is a tradition with humble beginnings of encouraging neighbors to keep a nice flowerpot out, harkening the return of “block pride” and community engagement through the conscious effort of beautification of the blocks that comprise Union Square. Each year the friendly competition strengthens neighborhood ties and introduces many new visitors to this distinct neighborhood. Association member and Bloom Your Block participant Kathy Filosi Nelson states,” We take great pride in our homes and love to extend a warm welcome to all who pass by with flowers! It just makes you smile!” Union Square is famous for its pre and post Civil War era architecture and distinctive homes that have maintained the original Greek Revival and Italianate architecture, which add to the overall beauty of the neighborhood and the Union Square Park.
