SD Monthly Community Relations Council Meetings will be temporarily postponed until a NEW SD CRC President is appointed. Please distribute through your individual communities and advise of any individuals who would like to seek this position. Below is the criteria for Community Relations Council President:

Mission of the CRC

“Provide the community with a direct conduit/bridge for balanced and productive discussions that identify opportunities, seek and address improvement to interactions with the police department & overall public safety through on-going campaigns focused on building community awareness, education, engagement and partnerships.”

Role of the President

The CRC President is the leader of this citizen led effort in each of the nine police districts in Baltimore City.

Basic requirements:

  • Must be a resident of the District
  • Must have a commitment to the Mission
  • Must be willing to be subject to a police background check
  • Not an elected government official

Suggested criteria to avoid possible conflicts of interest:

  • Not currently an officer of a neighborhood association
  • Not a State or local government employee
  • Not aspiring to run for an elected office

Duties:  The duties of the CRC President fall into three categories —  Leader of the CRC, Confidant to the District Commander, and District public safety representative to the Police Commissioner and his Command Staff, the Mayor and City Council, the State’s Attorney, and other public and private organizations.

-Leader of the CRC

o   Plan and chair monthly meetings of the CRC

o   Develop a team of people to help implement the activities of the CRC, if any.

o   Maintain an ongoing flow of communication with community leaders using social media and personal contact.  Encourage active neighborhood involvement in public safety and crime prevention.

o   Occasionally attend role calls, meet newly assigned officers, and do ride alongs to be familiar with officers’ concerns and let them know about community concerns.

-Confidant to the District Commander

o   Serve as an honest broker between the DC and the community through regular meetings and communication.  Help orient new DC’s.

o   Help the DC understand community priorities and serve as the “safety valve” for sensitive issues that may otherwise be overlooked.

o   Provide feedback on how residents view police services and behavior.

o   Review the daily conference call to be aware crime trends.

-District Public Safety Representative

o   Participate in monthly meetings with the Police Commissioner and his Command Staff.

o   Participate in occasional public safety meetings called by the Mayor, City Council, and State’s Attorney.

o   Serve as a conduit for electronic communication from various agencies to community leaders.
