New 215-Space Parking Lot Constructed in Port Covington

Changes in Port Covington continue to take place as part of Sagamore Development’s 266-acre, $5.5 billion redevelopment of the South Baltimore property. The latest update is a new parking lot to accommodate a growing number of visitors to the area.

Construction is wrapping up on the new 215-space parking lot located adjacent to The Baltimore Sun’s printing facility and directly across the street from Sagamore Spirit Distillery, which opened in April. The additional parking will be used for events at Sagamore Spirit; for Volo City, which will be hosting kickball on the grass fields around the parking lot; and for special events at Port Covington, according to Caroline Paff of Sagamore Development.

“It’s 215 spaces, and we expect it to stay in place as we commence Phase 1 of the new construction. It will eventually be demolished and replaced with the final development for that area, but it’s a needed parking lot for the short term,” said Paff.

Already completed at Port Covington is City Garage, the 133,000 sq. ft. former garage facility which is fully leased and described as “a hub for manufacturing, innovation and entrepreneurship;” Building 37, which converted the former Sam’s Club into a 170,000 sq. ft. Under Armour office building and amenity space; a renovated 240 W. Dickman St. which is now a home for several workforce development non-profits; and Sagamore Spirit. Public space improvements including landscaping and a mural have been added, and a bike path is currently under construction. Phase I of Under Armour’s new 50-acre campus is expected to be the next major construction project in Port Covington. 

Rye Street Tavern, a 13,000 sq. ft. restaurant and event space, is also expected to open at Sagamore Spirit in September. It is headed up by Chef Andrew Carmellini of the New York-based NoHo Hospitality Group.
