Weller Development Company, which is leading the development of Sagamore Development Company and Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group’s 235-acrew Port Covington redevelopment project, announced the launch of Weller Entertainment LLC this week. As an experiential marketing and production company, Weller Entertainment’s mission is to draw people to Port Covington through events and community engagement. Weller Entertainment looks to focus on panel discussions and outdoor concerts.

This weekend, Weller Entertainment is hosting the Healthy Baltimore Festival, a free day-long “Festival of Wellness” on June 16 featuring a live performance by Talib Kweli. On Sunday, Weller Entertainment has secured Matisyahu to perform a special concert at The Field in Port Covington.

One hundred percent of the net proceeds from all 2018-19 events will directly benefit charitable partners throughout the City.

“We believe that the success of Port Covington over the next 20 years must be shared by our neighbors across Baltimore City and Maryland,” said Marc Weller, founding partner of Weller Development Company, in a press release. “We have just begun to bring Port Covington to life with the development’s first properties in City Garage, Sagamore Spirit Distillery and Rye Street Tavern. As the project continues to gain momentum, we are thrilled to announce we have added Weller Entertainment to activate the property and attract people from across the region through meaningful experiences.”

Weller Entertainment will be led by Chip Watkins, a Baltimore native with experience creating programming in and around the region. His work includes productions for organizations including Red Bull Amaphiko, Believe in Music, Baltimore City Health Department, and nationally with the Cordish Cos. A longtime local arts professional, Watkins has served on the boards of directors for Believe in Music and Section1, and worked with a number of other local organizations to deliver programming.

Weller Entertainment’s first event was this past winter when it organized the Holiday Bazaar, a seasonal event which brought more than 40 local artisans and crafters to City Garage. In 2018, Weller Entertainment began hosting a series of “Deep Dive” networking events that aimed to provide a space and platform for conversation among professionals in different industries.

The company has also organized events including a free, day-long concert headlined by The Original Wailers for the Maryland SPCA’s ‘Festival for the Animals,’ a fundraising event that was held on May 5. The first of several planned SoBo Sunsets, an outdoor event series along the waterfront in Port Covington, was held on June 8.

Also on June 8, the Port Covington Development Team partnered with Baltimore City Public Schools and Bring The Noise to host ‘Success Fest,’ a day of activities and entertainment to reward 300 fourth to eighth-grade students from local public schools for their hard work.

“Port Covington will have a significant impact on all of Baltimore,” Weller said. “That doesn’t start in the future, it starts now. Weller Entertainment will be a major step towards defining how people view Port Covington and creating an inclusive and dynamic environment.”
