‘This Little Piggy Foot Spa and Nails Etc.’ Opens in Pigtown
This Little Piggy Foot Spa and Nails Etc. opened this past Saturday at 781 Washington Blvd. in Pigtown. The space was previously occupied by MetroPCS before it closed earlier this fall.
This Little Piggy is owned by Carol Blakeney who relocated to Pigtown from Maine five months ago. She noticed there were no other nail shops in the neighborhood and decided she would open one herself after learning about the soon-to-be-vacant retail space while attending the Pigtown Festival. Blakeney has been doing nails for 25 years and owned multiple nail shops in Maine.
Blakeney said she worked with Frieda Ulman and Kimberly Lane of Pigtown Main Street and Omar Velasco of the Latino Economic Development Center to help launch the business.
Blakeney took on a cosmetic renovation of the space over the last couple of months. This included a lot of painting and adding shabby-chic touches. The retail space has several private rooms that will be used for foot massages and pedicures. A permanent exterior sign is coming soon.
This Little Piggy will offer pedicures and manicures, as well as paraffin wax dips. Blakeney said it will be a “funky shabby-chic” nail salon. She said uses an antique bucket for pedicures. The ‘Etc.’ in the name represents the shabby-chic furniture items that the shop will also sell.
This Little Piggy is offering $10 manicures, $25 pedicures, and free paraffin wax dips during its grand opening period that is currently underway.
“It’s always exciting when you get to have your own place,” said Blakeney. “It gives me an opportunity to meet people in the neighborhood.”
Blakeney noted all of our her customers so far have been from the Pigtown neighborhood. Customers have told Blakeney they used to get their nails done in other neighborhoods like Fells Point.
“Pigtown is a tight-knit community. Everyone is friendly and helpful and I’ve made some great friends already,” said Blakeney.
The Little Piggy is open every day from 10am to 8pm.
