Scooter Companies Lime, Bolt, Spin, and Jump Now Officially Permitted to Operate in the City

Last week, Baltimore City Department of Transportation (BCDOT) Acting Director Steve Sharkey announced Baltimore awarded its first annual dockless vehicle permits to Lime, Bolt, Spin and Jump. Bird, which was the first dockless electric scooter company to arrive in Baltimore, was not selected. Bolt will be a newcomer to Baltimore.

Following the City’s Dockless Vehicle Pilot Program that began in August of last year, the Baltimore City passed Council Bill 19-0324 followed by a public comment period on Rules & Regulations. BCDOT opened a competitive application period and received seven applications which were scored by a committee of BCDOT representatives, the Mayor’s Office of Performance and Innovation, Baltimore City’s Law Department, and the Department of Planning.

Lime will now offer dockless electric assist bikes. Uber-owned Jump also plans to add bikes to its fleet.

Bolt is co-founded by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. Unlike the other single-platform electric scooters, Bolt has two platforms for riders to stand on when they ride.

Spin has its local operations in Sharp-Leadenhall.

“This dockless program affirms my commitment to providing equitable and accessible transportation options for the residents of Baltimore City,” said Baltimore City Mayor Bernard “Jack” C. Young in a press release. “We are creating new and sustainable mobility choices that are efficient for Baltimore residents and all those who visit our great city.”

“The Department of Transportation is excited with the quality and number of dockless operators selected for the 2019 program,” said Sharkey. “This is a major step towards more equitable transportation options that will help the citizens of Baltimore City. Over the course of the next year, we will continue to evaluate this program in an effort to improve services being provided by the four companies.”
