Congressman Elijah Cummings Dies at the Age of 68

Congressman Elijah Cummings (D, MD-7) died Thursday morning at the age 68 due to complications concerning longstanding health challenges. Congressman Cummings’ district included Southwest Baltimore neighborhoods including Pigtown, Hollins Market, and Union Square, along with additional sections of Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Howard County.

Congressman Cummings served the 7th District since 1996 and was previously a member of the Maryland House of Delegates. He was born and raised in Baltimore and was a graduate of Baltimore City College, Howard University, and University of Maryland Law School.

Congressman Cummings, at the age of 11, was one of the first African American children to integrate Riverside Park Pool in the Summer of 1962. A bottle or rock was hurled at his forehead when unrest ensued and it caused a scar for the rest of his life.

He is survived by wife Maya Rockeymoore Cummings and three children.
