Senator Bill Ferguson Now the Maryland Senate President

| November 1, 2019 | 0 Comments

Senator Bill Ferguson (D), who has been the District 46 Senator since 2011, is now the Maryland Senate President. He replaced Senator Mike Miller (D) who held the position for 32 years.

Senator Miller stepped down as he is battling prostate cancer.

Senator Ferguson, who is 36 years old, was unanimously selected by the Democratic Caucus of the Maryland Senate. He will face an official vote for Senate President during the Maryland General Assembly next year.

District 46 covers much of South and Southeast Baltimore.

Senator Ferguson released the following statement in an email:

At Thursday’s Democratic Senate Caucus meeting, Senate President Mike Miller announced that he will be stepping down as Senate President. Marking a new chapter in Senate history, the 32 member Caucus unanimously voted to nominate me as the next Senate President to carry on Mike Miller’s lasting legacy.  I am truly honored to receive this nomination.

For over 33 years Senate President Mike Miller has reached one milestone after another for our great state. From cleaning the Chesapeake Bay to fighting for education reform, the Senate President has played a key role in every major policy decision throughout his tenure. I have been humbled to learn such a great deal about leadership from Mike Miller in the last 9 years. As I transition into this new role, we will continue to work side by side as the Senate reaches new progress for all Marylanders.

Thank you to all the members of the Democratic Caucus who have placed their tremendous faith in me, and to all who have made this possible along the way, especially the voters of District 46 who gave me the opportunity to serve as your Senator in Annapolis.  I look forward to working with all 46 of my fellow Senators to continue to protect and uphold the values of all Marylanders.
