President Trump to Visit Fort McHenry for Memorial Day

President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will visit Fort McHenry in Locust Point this Monday for Memorial Day. From The Hill:

“President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will again lead the American people in solemn remembrance of those brave American patriots who laid down their lives so we can live in the land of the free,” the official said in a statement.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper, Interior Secretary David Bernhardt and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley are also expected to attend.

Fort McHenry, which is part of the National Park Service, has been closed to the public since March 28th due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is unclear at this time if President Trump will land at Fort McHenry via the Marine One helicopter or take a motorcade through Locust Point into the park.

Governor Larry Hogan’s office had the following reaction to the visit, according to David Collins of WBAL: “We are honored that the president and the first lady have chosen to spend Memorial Day at Fort McHenry. Monday is the governor’s birthday, and he has plans to mark the day at home with his family.”

Baltimore City Mayor Bernard C. Young said the following in a statement: “That President Trump is deciding to pursue non-essential travel sends the wrong message to our residents, many of whom have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 virus. I wish that the president, as our nation’s leader, would set a positive example and not travel during this holiday weekend.”

He added: “I would hope that the President would change his mind and decide to remain at home. If he decides, however, to move forward with his scheduled trip to Baltimore we will, of course, be prepared for his visit.”

President Trump has encouraged local governors and mayors to reopen the country, but Mayor Young has declined to enact Governor Hogan’s Phase One for reopening Maryland at this time.
