Vice President Mike Pence to Give RNC Speech Today at Fort McHenry
Vice President Mike Pence will be giving his Republican National Convention (RNC) speech today from Fort McHenry in Locust Point. The national park will be closed today in preparation for the event and for security reasons.
The RNC is scheduled to air today from 820pm to 12am.
E. Fort Ave. was closed yesterday evening at Benjamin St., but it is currently open. Barricades have been placed to cut off sidewalk access on E. Fort Ave. just past the bridge leading to Fort McHenry. When President Donald Trump visited Fort McHenry on Memorial Day, he and his team landed at the park in the Marine One helicopter and the traffic disruption was minimal.
Fort McHenry was a key military base used to defend the Baltimore Harbor during the War of 1812, and the flag flown at the base during the Battle of Baltimore in 1814 inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the Star Spangled Banner. Fort McHenry also played roles in the Civil War, World War I, and World War II. It was dedicated as a national park in 1939.
