Light Rail Track Maintenance Begins on May 16th

Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) press release:

The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) will begin planned Light RailLink track maintenance Sunday, May 16.

The work will reconstruct three interlockings and replace more than 3,000 track feet of rail along 10 curves between the North Avenue and Camden Yard stops. Interlockings are rail components that allow trains to cross from one track to another. The planned maintenance work is scheduled to continue through September 21.

“This maintenance work is part of MDOT MTA’s investment in keeping our system in a state of good repair,” said MTA Administrator Kevin Quinn. “We ask for our riders’ patience as we conduct this work, which will help us maintain the integrity of our system and continue to run safe and reliable service.”

As employers continue to support telework options and customers limit their use of transit, MDOT MTA ridership on Light Rail remains down nearly 65% of pre-pandemic levels. This critical track work is being completed now to minimize impact to riders. To ensure continuity of service, Light RailLink trains will proceed via single track between the Falls Road and Camden stops. A free bus bridge will also provide supplemental service between the affected Light Rail stops to lessen rider delays.

MDOT MTA will continue to keep riders informed through signage at each stop, platform announcements, updates via social media and the MDOT MTA website, and e-alert notification system. Passengers can also call the Transit Information Contact Center at 410-539-5000.

The North Avenue to Camden Yards track work is the first of two state of good repair projects scheduled for 2021. The second track maintenance project, from Camden to Glen Burnie/BWI, will begin in the fall. photo
