Regency Centers Vice President Andrew Kabat confirmed to SouthBMore.com today the replacement for Shoppers at Southside Marketplace will be Giant Food. Shoppers is set to close on May 28th and Giant hopes to open by the end of this year.

The 44,264 sq. ft. Shoppers had been for sale since 2019. UNFI acquired Shoppers’ former parent company, SUPERVALU, in 2018. Shoppers was started in Washington, D.C. and was acquired by SUPERVALU in 1999. UNFI is a food distributor and is transitioning out of the retail business after the acquisition of SUPERVALU.

Giant has not responded to multiple requests for comment in recent weeks. The company is based in Landover and has 169 stores in the region.

Kabat told SouthBMore.com Regency Centers is excited about the addition of Giant.

Multiple Shoppers employees have recently told SouthBMore.com they have not heard from Giant officials about job openings, but were aware the company was taking over the space.

In 2019, there were 36 Shoppers locations. Today, 20 locations remain open.

The Shoppers in Brooklyn Park is now a Lidl.
