Additional Details About Giant Food Coming to Southside Marketplace

Giant Food will be taking 0ver the 44,264 sq. ft. Shoppers space at Southside Marketplace in Locust Point/Riverside by the end of this year. Shoppers is now closed.

Giant Food has declined to share any additional details about the new store at this time. Andrew Kabat, senior vice president and senior market officer of Regency Centers, which owns Southside Marketplace, however shared some additional information about the new store.

Kabat said the Giant Food will not have a pharmacy. He also confirmed the space will remain a one-story building and that Giant Food will only be backfilling the existing Shoppers space.

The 44,264 sq. ft. Shoppers had been for sale since 2019. UNFI acquired Shoppers’ former parent company, SUPERVALU, in 2018. Shoppers was started in Washington, D.C. and was acquired by SUPERVALU in 1999. UNFI is a food distributor and is transitioning out of the retail business after the acquisition of SUPERVALU.

Giant Food is based in Landover and has 169 stores in the region.
