From Councilman Eric Costello:

UPDATE – Shooting / Homicide – May 28 @ ~7:34pm – 300 block of E Pratt St – Joint Statement from Downtown Partnership of Baltimore President Shelonda Stokes, Waterfront Partnership President Laurie Schwartz, and Councilman Eric T. Costello:

“It’s with both a heavy heart and an awareness of the safety issues Downtown and in the Inner Harbor that we write to you on a Sunday afternoon. By now, you may know that two people were shot at the Inner Harbor last night around 7:30pm. Tragically, one of the victims, a 17-year-old male, died. This loss of life impacts not only the families of those involved, but it adds a level of fear to those who chose to live, work, or visit the city.

We have been in several meetings with the Baltimore Police Department and Mayor’s Office. And these conversations didn’t just start post-incident; we’ve been collaborating consistently as we head into each weekend with a coordinated deployment plan. But even with an increased presence of 20 officers near the location of the shooting, a life was still taken. We agree that it’s unconscionable, we also recognize that action is required.

We are aware of additional sanctioned and unsanctioned events planned for the weekend. BPD is communicating with other law enforcement agencies and community organizations regarding their efforts to ensure adequate public safety presence to ensure that Downtown and the Inner Harbor are safe for everyone. Short-term, there are increased safety efforts and intelligence. They are also exploring new strategies. Long-term, we recognize the importance of engaging and servicing our disconnected youth with hopes of positively impacting how they view life. The solution is city-wide and goes beyond law enforcement to include policy updates, family support, and business engagement.”
