Baltibrew’s event Chilibrew is returning this year after a two year hiatus the past two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event takes place October 8th from 7pm-10pm at Zion Church of Baltimore City Downtown.

Baltibrew is a homebrewing club in Baltimore that started in 2009. Board member Max Reed told SouthBMore.com that most of the current board members live in South Baltimore. Chilibrew started in 2010 and this is the 14th time the event has taken place.

Every year Baltibrew uses Chilibrew to raise money for a small nonprofit. This year the event benefits. Baltimore Green Space, which “helps preserve community gardens, pocket parks, and urban forests for generations to come.”

Zion Church of Baltimore City, which was founded in 1755, has been known as the “German Church of Baltimore.” It still offers services in German, has a German language school, and offers events such as the Sour Beef Dinner.

Reed said Zion Church of Baltimore City “looks like a German beer hall during the event.” He said a lot of families with roots in German brewing have their names in the stained glass at the church.

Tickets are $30 and guests can enjoy all-you-can-eat beer and chili. There will be a variety of beer styles available and vegetarian and and meat chilis will be available. All guests will get a Chilibrew glass and Chilibrew shirts will also be sold.

Riverside’s Wiley Gunters is a sponsor of this year’s event.

Contestants will compete for best beer and chili. There is a celebrity panel of chili and beer judges and there will also be winners in the popular vote.

Baltibrew also has a spring event called Brübakes, another homebrewing contest that features baked goods made from used brewing grains.

Reed said Baltibrew has a variety of members from homebrewing enthusiasts, members looking to open their own brewery one day, and people that just love beer. Several recent members have opened their own breweries in Baltimore and Pennsylvania in recent years.
