Biotechnology company Haystack Oncology, Inc. has signed a lease for 20,000 sq. ft. of space within the City Garage Science & Technology Center in Port Covington. Haystack Oncology will move from its current facility in Remington to Port Covington in Summer 2023.

The 135,000 sq. ft. City Garage was redeveloped by Sagamore Ventures in 2016 and purchased by South Duvall in 2021. City Garage is part of the newly-rebranded Baltimore Peninsula project which is redeveloping 235 acres of Port Covington.

Under Armour vacated its 70,000 sq. ft. UA Lighthouse facility in City Garage earlier this year. It moved those offices to Building 37 at its Port Covington campus. Haystack will take over part of the former Under Armour space which his being converted into an area for life sciences companies.

Mark Deering, partner of MacKenzie Commercial Real Estate Services, represented the tenant in this transaction. Nate Crowe of Scheer Partners represented the landlord.

The mission of Haystack Oncology is to “provide best-in-class personalized cancer diagnostics to patients and improve outcomes for those who may benefit from proactive clinical interventions. The company’s technology is based on more than 20 years of liquid biopsy research and clinical development pioneered by cancer genomicists responsible for the development of early cancer screening tests.”

The new space at City Garage will feature an open office design as well as specialized clinical diagnostic, research, and sample processing labs. Mechanical and electrical systems will be configured within the space to support the energy and HVAC requirements of the clinical-grade medical testing performed at the company.

“We’re looking forward to building out a state-of-the-art clinical laboratory at City Garage to support the innovations in precision medicine that Haystack Oncology is delivering to the clinic,” said Dan Edelstein, CEO and president of Haystack Oncology, in a press release. “Accessibility to the extraordinary life science expertise in the Baltimore region makes the location particularly attractive.”

“City Garage is a recognized destination for research and development and life sciences companies, so with this move, Haystack Oncology will be situated in a high-energy environment with like-minded organizations,” said Deering in a press release. “The project features lab-ready infrastructure, convenient access off Interstate 95 and an entrepreneurial atmosphere that will serve as an amenity to attract new talent to the company.”
