South Baltimore’s Checkerspot Brewing Company was selected as the winner of the Samuel Adams’ Brewing the American Dream Brewer’s Experience Competition in September. Earlier this month, Checkerspot Brewing Company owners Judy and Rob Neff headed up to Boston to work with Samuel Adams and its parent company Boston Beer Company on a rye IPA that will be available in April or May.

The rye IPA will be available only on tap at Checkerspot Brewing Company. It was brewed in partnership with Boston Beer Company in its 10-barrel research and development brewing system in Boston. Judy Neff said it will likely have an ABV in the 7 percent to 7.5 percent range.

It will be a limited release with 20 half kegs being produced.

Judy Neff said they wanted to use rye as it’s a signature crop of Maryland. Checkerspot Brewing Company also offers a rye lager called 395 Rye on tap in its taproom. The Neffs worked with Boston Beer Company to pick out hops and ingredients for the beer.

Checkerspot Brewing Company will have a release party when the rye IPA hits its taps.

Judy Neff said it was great to meet with Samuel Adams Founder Jim Koch and to pick the brains of many people at Boston Beer Company who work in different aspects of the business.

In September, Checkerspot Brewing Company will move to a new 18,000 sq. ft. brewery at 1421 Ridgely St., just a couple blocks west of its current location. Construction is underway on the building which was purchased by the Neffs.

Judy Neff said the new building will be “bigger in every way.”

Checkerspot Brewing Company currently has 20 employees who work in production, distribution, sales, and marketing. Judy Neff said about 60 percent of its volume goes to distribution which they self-distribute in Maryland, however Checkerspot Brewing Company will soon partner with Legends Distributing to enter the Washington, D.C. market.
