Chimney Cake Shop ‘Buns & Roses’ Now Open Federal Hill

| July 21, 2023 | 0 Comments

Chimney cake shop Buns & Roses opened at 803 Light St. in Federal Hill this month. Buns & Roses is a concept by Baltimore native and Atlanta resident Deirdre Campbell. It is her take on Hungarian chimney cakes.

Campbell said she discovered chimney cakes seven years ago on a trip to Paris and has been thinking about them ever since. When she took her first bite she thought, “What in the warm doughnut is this?”

She noted the shop also had a really hip vibe.

Buns & Roses’ chimney cakes are a daily-made fresh dough rolled on to a wooden spool and cooked in a chimney cake oven. They are then filled with ice cream drizzles, toppings, and glazes. Campbell makes her own soft-serve ice cream that will eventually come in ten flavors. Customers can also get chimney cakes without ice cream.

The most popular chimney cake at Buns & Roses, according to Campbell, is the Strawberry Crunch. It has vanilla been ice cream, a strawberry crunch chimney cone, a fresh strawberry, strawberry crunch, and a white chocolate drizzle. It also offers the Oreo Smash, Banana Pudding, Ohh So Cookie Butter, Fruity Pebbles, and Toasted Chocolate S’mores chimney cakes.

Other dessert items on  the menu are the Butter Crunch Cookie Pudding with crumbled Lindens Butter Crunch cookies, apple dumplings, croissants, and banana pudding.

The menu also has Unicorn Lattes using Zeke’s Coffee that come in pink, blue, and purple. Campbell said she was inspired by the colors and flavors in bubble tea.

Buns & Roses also offers its Mojito Mint Tea, Georgia Peach Lemonade, and Pineapple Smash Tea.

Campbell has a corporate job in Atlanta where she also owns a car wash and smoke shop. She also owns a mobile champagne bar.

Campbell discovered the storefront for rent on a walk from Watershed to the Inner Harbor with her father. She said fell in love with the location of the space and thought a store here would be a way to bring her back to Baltimore eventually. She loves that the location is in Federal Hill but also steps away from the Inner Harbor.

Campbell is looking to franchise Buns & Roses and is forming a partnership for its next location in Dallas, TX.

The interior of Buns & Roses, which used to be Tradestone Gallery Treasures of Russia, has bar seating in the window and back; floral décor highlighted by white, pink, and purple; and a phone booth honoring the European connection of the concept. It also has a patio with outdoor seating.

Buns & Roses is open Tuesday to Thursday from 10am to 8pm and Friday and Saturday from 10am to 9pm.

Campbell said the shop has been very busy and its Instagram has quickly grown to almost 10,000. Campbell said she has been blown away by the immediate success of her new business. Buns & Roses has already been visited by many of the biggest food Instagram accounts in Baltimore, which she said has helped spread the word.
