Restaurants ‘Slutty Vegan’ and ‘Bar Vegan’ Coming to Baltimore Peninsula

Restaurants Slutty Vegan and Bar Vegan are coming to the Rye Street Market building in the Baltimore Peninsula development. The two concepts, which are expected to open in late-2024, were started in Atlanta, Georgia by Baltimore-native Pinky Cole.

These are the first two new restaurant concepts announced for the five buildings recently constructed at Baltimore Peninsula. Also opening next year will be a revamped Rye Street Tavern at the Sagamore Spirit Distillery, which was completed in 2017, under the new ownership of Clyde’s Restaurant Group.

Rye Street Market is a 273,000 sq. ft. building with 228,000 sq. ft. of office space and 45,000 sq. ft. of ground-floor retail. Slutty Vegan and Bar Vegan will occupy the large first-floor space fronting E. Cromwell St. The retail at Rye Street Market also shares a large outdoor courtyard.

Cole, who is 35, grew up in the Cedmont neighborhood of Northeast Baltimore and is a graduate of Western High School. She spoke at a press event today at Rye Street Market about how her father spent 22 years in prison and how she was kicked out of Baltimore City College during her Junior year. She was transferred to her zoned school, but wrote a letter to the Baltimore School Board asking for a second chance and was able to enroll at Western High School. She took advantage of that opportunity and was accepted to Clark Atlanta University.

She worked as a television producer in New York, briefly had a Jamaican restaurant before it was destroyed in a fire, and started Slutty Vegan out of her Atlanta apartment in 2018. She grew the business into a food truck and brick-and-mortar restaurant, and today has 11 locations.

Bar Vegan opened in 2021 in Atlanta.

Cole credited her “Baltimore grit” for her ability to overcome obstacles and achieve success. Cole, who recently wrote a book called “I Hope You Fail,” hopes her success will be an inspiration for other Baltimoreans.

Slutty Vegan will be a smaller business at Rye Street Market, with a large focus on carryout. Slutty Vegan’s menu is all plant-based and includes burgers, sandwiches, fries, and chili.

Bar Vegan is a plant-based, sit-down restaurant with a variety of plates including tacos, spaghetti, sandwiches, pizza, salads, and brunch. It also has a cocktail menu. It will have a larger footprint in they Rye Street Market space.

Construction is expected to begin on the restaurants next year.
