A letter from Baltimore Family Alliance to Mayor Brandon Scott:

To Mayor Brandon Scott,

My name is J’aime Drayton and I am the Executive Director of Baltimore Family Alliance. Baltimore Family Alliance is an alliance of over 5,000 families committed to living in Baltimore City and making our City a better place for the next generation of Baltimoreans.

We appreciate your leadership and love for Baltimore City. We know that you care about this great City.

Recently, there has been a string of armed robberies that have spanned from South Baltimore in neighborhoods such as Federal Hill and Riverside across the harbor to Southeast Baltimore in Canton and Brewers Hill. We believe there have been additional armed robberies in Charles Village as well as Bolton Hill.

On behalf of these families, we would like to ask for an increased presence from BPD and the Sheriff’s Department on Halloween.  Mayor Scott, we are asking that you flood the areas of these 49 incidents. Halloween should be an evening of fun for the families in our city.

I, as well as every other citizen, am all too familiar with the “we are understaffed” line being shared by BPD. Thankfully, there are several other law enforcement agencies with sworn jurisdiction who would provide available support like the Sheriff’s Department.

Lack of Communications

Police Commissioner Worley is committed to community policing which begins with communication. We are asking that you hold the Police Commissioner accountable for communicating with all sectors across the city.

If any community associations have ideas for a communication program, please utilize those ideas and test them. Failure to communicate leaves us in the dark about patterns and trends that cause fear and harm to our families.

Family Safety

We encourage you to think about the safety of our residents first and foremost. This information should be direct, clear and open for feedback.  I’ve included recent statement from a resident family:

“I was prepared for a lot of things as a parent but I didn’t really prepare myself to have to explain that is okay to be REALLY SCARED after my five-year-old witnessed another man taking a crowbar to another man while we were returning from school. The fact that I entirely qualify this as “the first homicide” he might witness is probably one of the things I’m most scared about- why do we normalize homicide and violent behavior?  Is one acceptable— is 400? Does any child in this city deserve to witness, be a part of, or lose their life to violent behavior?  The answer is clearly no, but yet the response from city officials, leaders, Baltimore City PD, our justice system, and our school system have normalized violence and conflict & homicide and crime. We can not expect to recruit and retain families in this city when this is our reality. “ –Family in Southwest Baltimore

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Best,

J’aime Drayton
