Photo Tour Inside The Baltimore Sun’s Former Printing Facility

Last year, SouthBMore.com got a tour inside The Baltimore Sun’s shuttered 256,033 sq. ft. printing facility in Baltimore Peninsula. The Baltimore Sun vacated the building, which originally opened in 1988, at the end of 2022 before the building was ultimately demolished last October.

The interior of the building was undergoing demolition at the time of SouthBMore.com’s tour. The building had very tall ceilings in the middle of the building and catwalks located throughout.

The building was the home of the newspaper’s printing press and it became the newspaper’s headquarters in 2018. The Baltimore Sun planned to develop the 60-acre property with office buildings after constructing the printing press in the 1980s, but those plans never moved forward.

Sagamore Ventures, which is part of the Baltimore Peninsula Development team, purchased The Baltimore Sun’s 60-acre Sun Park in 2014. Some of the acquired land was used for Chapter 1B of the Baltimore Peninsula development, which opened five new buildings last year.

After considering temporary uses for The Baltimore Sun building, the development team ultimately decided to demolish the building.

The Master Plan for the development shows an angled greenway park system running through where The Baltimore Sun’s former building was located. There are a number of new buildings surrounding the property.

Adjacent to the south and west of the The Baltimore Sun building is the new home of Volo Beach. It already has four beach volleyball courts and will add spaces for pickle ball, soccer, football, kickball, bocce, cornhole, and food and beverage.

The Baltimore Sun moved into its new headquarters at 200 St. Paul Place in early 2023.

In January, David D. Smith, executive chairman of Sinclair Inc., and political commentator Armstrong Williams reached an agreement to acquire the newspaper.
