‘South Baltimore Music Academy’ Coming to Federal Hill

| March 18, 2024 | 0 Comments

South Baltimore Music Academy, a sister location of the Patterson Park Academy of Music, will open on April 8th in Federal Hill. South Baltimore Music Academy is a co-tenant of the 740 Light St. office building with The Therapy Stop and The Well.

Patterson Park Academy of Music was launched in 2021 by Joshua Espinoza and Erik Franklin. Espinoza is a pianist and teacher by trade. Franklin was a clarinetist in an Army ensemble at Fort Meade and is also a composer.

Espinoza started teaching piano lessons from his home in Upper Fells Point, soon had a waiting list, and saw the need to build a music school. Espinoza partnered with Franklin and they launched the Patterson Park Academy of Music using rooms at a community center at 100 S. Washington St. in 2021. It has grown to about 150 students.

Patterson Park Academy of Music started getting inquiries from families in South Baltimore and Espinoza and Franklin spent the past two and a half years looking for a space to open a second academy.

“We don’t make a whole bunch of noise, but convincing a landlord of that is tough,” said Espinoza.

Espinoza said the individual doctor rooms at 740 Light St. are ideal for music lessons.

South Baltimore Music Academy will offer an expansive range of music lessons to students ages 5 and up, including one-on-one instruction in piano, violin, cello, guitar, ukulele, and drums. Enrollment is currently open.

South Baltimore Music Academy will also offer specialized baby and toddler music classes for ages 0 to 5 beginning in Fall 2024.

Espinoza said they recommend a three-week trial period to get students some musical experience, but also let the students gauge if its something they want to continue.

South Baltimore Music Academy will have recitals in May and December.

South Baltimore Music Academy hires teachers who are “specialists at their instrument.”

“Our mission at Patterson Park Academy of Music has always been to enrich the lives of our community through the joy of music,” said Espinoza in a press release. “The opening of the South Baltimore Music Academy is an exciting step toward our goal of fostering creativity and musical exploration from the very earliest ages. Our instructors are not only highly experienced performers, but we handpick teachers who are truly excellent with children and can quickly ignite a child’s imagination and musical interest from the get-go.”

“We’re grateful to operate alongside the fantastic folks at The Therapy Stop and The Well, two respected wellness-oriented organizations in the SoBo community,” added Espinoza.
