Demolition began this summer at BGE’s Westport Substation. The 80-year-old substation will be replaced with a new indoor substation with a smaller footprint. Construction on the new substation is expected to start this year.
This project follows the completion of the Clare Street Substation which opened in recent months across the street.
Nick Alexopulos, senior manager of communications for BGE, told SouthBMore.com: “These substations are part of a larger project that benefits 24,000 customers in South Baltimore City (and growing). Critical customers include multiple state and federal agencies, health care facilities, critical infrastructure, and more. This is grid backbone infrastructure for South Baltimore, making service more reliable and resilient for area communities and further preparing the electric system to support the state of Maryland’s energy transformation.”
He added: “By replacing aging substations and cables, we’ll reduce future maintenance expenses and eliminate potential environmental risks.”
The updates to the electrical infrastructure in Westport comes as the adjacent 43-acre One Westport development project is now rising out of the ground. The current Phase One of the project includes a relocation of Kloman St. and the construction of 247 townhomes by Ryan Homes. Future phases of the project are expected to bring 300-plus additional townhomes, retail buildings, and an affordable housing project.
