A bridge in Locust Point that spans Key Highway and connects the 900 and 1000 blocks of E. Fort Ave. has received a colorful makeover and new “Locust Point” signage as part of an ongoing neighborhood beautification effort led by the Locust Point Civic Association (LPCA).

The project serves as a continuation of LPCA’s street banner initiative and is intended to create a more welcoming gateway into the neighborhood.

The bridge was painted on both sides along the concrete ledges bordering the sidewalks. The design features panels of blue, orange, yellow, and aqua with “Locust Point” displayed in the center. LPCA collaborated with artist and former Locust Point resident Nicole Buchholz on the design. Volunteers helped with the actual painting.

The bridge improvements, combined with the installation of new light pole banners throughout the neighborhood, cost approximately $15,000. Funding was provided through donations from Domino Sugar, developer Mark Sapperstein, and private donors.

The project was completed in anticipation of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, including Sail 250 Maryland and the Baltimore Air Show in June.

“We really wanted to brighten up the whole area and welcome people to Locust Point,” said LPCA Board Member Dave Arndt.

Arndt noted that before painting could begin, the bridge required extensive cleaning, weed removal, and priming of the concrete ledges. The design was intentionally kept simple to make future maintenance and touch-ups easier.
