It has been a banner year for South Baltimore Little League (SBLL) as the league captured five District 4 championships in 8-10 Baseball, 9-11 Baseball, 10-12 Baseball, 11-13 Baseball, and 9-11 Softball.
The 8-10 Baseball, 9-11 Baseball, and 10-12 Baseball teams each went undefeated in District 4 tournament play. The 11-13 Baseball and 9-11 Softball teams earned automatic berths to their respective state tournaments.
The 8-10 Baseball Maryland State Little League Tournament begins Saturday at SBLL in Locust Point. SBLL’s 8-10 Baseball All-Stars qualified for the tournament after winning the District 4 championship and will play their first game Sunday at 11:30am. The 8-10 Baseball team outscored its opponents 44-7 during the District 4 Tournament.
The 9-11 Baseball All-Stars will travel to Kent Island Little League this weekend for their state tournament. SBLL opens tournament play Saturday at 11am against Rising Sun after outscoring its District 4 opponents 70-0.
The 10-12 Baseball All-Stars will begin their state tournament on July 18 at Marty Snook Little League. SBLL opens tournament play against Hughesville at 7pm after outscoring District 4 opponents 70-3. The 10-12 Baseball tournament serves as the pathway to the Little League Baseball World Series. Maryland’s state champion will advance to the Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament to face champions from Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C., with games televised on ESPN. The regional winner earns a berth in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
The 11-13 Baseball State Tournament is already underway at Arbutus Middle School, where SBLL advanced to the semifinals after defeating Denton 8-3 on Wednesday. SBLL will face Chesapeake City at 5pm Thursday, with the winner advancing to the championship game. The tournament is double elimination.
Update: The 11-13 team defeated Chesapeake City on Thursday night and will play in the State Championship game on Sunday at 10am.
The SBLL 9-11 Softball team was eliminated from the state tournament this week but represented South Baltimore well. Softball returned to South Baltimore Little League in 2023 and has grown to 129 players across four divisions.
SBLL has never won a Maryland state championship in its 69-year history.
As the host team this coming weekend, the 8-10 Baseball All-Stars received a first-round bye and will face the winner of South County (Washington County) and South Caroline (Caroline County) during its Sunday game on Field 1 at SBLL. The league is hoping South Baltimore players, families, and residents will pack the complex to create a strong home-field advantage.
Teams from Montgomery County Little League, Berlin Little League, North East Little League, and Hughesville Little League will also compete in the South Baltimore tournament. Weather permitting, the tournament will conclude Thursday or Friday.
