There was a very scary accident this afternoon in Pigtown around 1pm as a sedan eluding the police ran a red light at Carey St. as it intersects Washington Blvd. The sedan, which was carrying the driver and a woman and baby, rammed into a pickup truck and caused both vehicles to pile up in between a street light and a home at 1301 Washington Blvd. A witness told SouthBMore.com that the driver of the sedan fled the scene and the two passengers of the pickup truck had to be cut out of the vehicle. Witnesses told The Baltimore Sun that the suspect was quickly apprehended by police.
The home at 1301 Washington Blvd. experienced minimal damage.
From an article in the Baltimore Sun:
The infant was in a car seat, according to witnesses, and was taken to University of Maryland’s pediatric unit with only minor injuries, said Ian Brennan, a spokesman for the Fire Department. A 26-year-old woman who was also in the vehicle suffered a gruesome arm injury, the witnesses said.
People had to be extricated from both vehicles by Baltimore City firefighters, who at one point were standing on top of the wrecks. Brennan said the 49-year-old driver of the vehicle that was hit was taken to Shock Trauma with only minor injuries.
WBAL is reporting that the suspect was fleeing a drug investigation. Here is a video from a surveillance camera at American Food Market, located on the opposite corner of the scene of the accident, posted by WBAL:
