Zac Blanchard Takes 28-Vote Lead in District 11 Council Race

| May 22, 2024 | 0 Comments

It’s now eight days after the Primary Election and votes are still being counted. After 1,140 mail-in ballots were counted last week and 556 mail-in ballots were counted this week, Zac Blanchard has taken a 28-vote lead over 2.5-term incumbent Councilman Eric Costello in the District 11 Council election. The race remains incredibly tight and too close to call.

Provisional ballots, which are expected to exceed 500, will be counted today and tomorrow and each night results are uploaded.

Abigail Goldman, Election Deputy Director of the Baltimore City Board of Elections told SouthBMore.com, “on Friday morning we will do any late arriving ballots that were post marked by election night and then hopefully certify.”

The current unofficial vote totals stand at Blanchard with 3,246 votes (50.22%) and Councilman Costello with 3,218 votes (49.79%).

After election day, Councilman Costello had a 25-vote lead.

Blanchard sent the following letter to his email list:

Friends,

We’re up! We won the 556 votes that were counted today by a 135-vote margin, putting us up 28 votes [note: this is preliminary based on data received from the Baltimore City Board of Canvassers today. It’s not official until the state updates their numbers here.

We expect about 700 or so 11th District provisional ballots to be counted tomorrow and Thursday, and are optimistic those ballots will break for us as well. There is also a small number of overseas and absentee ballots to be counted on Friday. No idea how those will break.

Thank you all for your support and stay tuned,

Zac

Blanchard told SouthBMore.com, “We’re pumped about yesterday’s news, but there’s a lot of ballots left to count this week, so it’s still a completely neck-and-neck race.”

Following election day, Councilman Costello said on social media, “I want to think my supporters and everyone who voted in the 11 District. There are still too many votes to count to declare victory in this race, but I remain confident and grateful.”

Both Councilman Costello and Blanchard are residents of Federal Hill, and recently appeared on episodes of the SouthBMore.com podcast to share more about their backgrounds and goals for South Baltimore.

No Republicans are running for the District 11 Council position.
