South Baltimore Business: Openings, Closings and Moves in 2013

1111.01 FFAs always, covering the business community in South Baltimore keeps us busy here at SouthBMore.com. There are thousands of businesses in the area with many always coming and going. While we saw some favorite neighborhood businesses close their doors, 2013 was another year where the small business community of South Baltimore took a big step forward overall.

Betamore, an incubator for technology startups that launched at the end of last year at 1111 Light Street in Federal Hill, helped create 28 new businesses alone.

Below is a breakdown of the openings, closings and moves of small businesses in Federal Hill, Riverside, Locust Point, SBNA, Pigtown, Hollins Market and Ridgely’s Delight.

Opened:

2 Chic Boutique, Pigtown– Opened in a newly renovated space at 761 Washington Blvd. The space was previously vacant for many years.
7-Eleven, Pigtown– Opened at 711 Washington Blvd. in a space that was once a beauty store.
AFP Logistics & Service, Montgomery Park– Moved from Anne Arundel County to 185,000 sq. ft. in the complex.
Art Studio, Federal Hill– Two local artists moved into 717 Light St., the former space of A Cook’s Table, which was previously vacant for multiple years.
Artichoke, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Auctionopia, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Baltimore City Robotics Center, Hollins Market– Opened in a space at 1001 W. Pratt St. The space was previously vacant for multiple years.
BambooMoves Yoga, Locust Point– Opened at 1624 Fort Ave. The space was previously vacant for more than a year.
Bikemore, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Bmore Vapes, Federal Hill– Opened at 905 Light St. in the former home of The Armoire.
Bold Yellow, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Brothers Sushi, Federal Hill– Opened at 1035 S. Charles St. in the former home of Nichiban.
BTS Software SolutionsFederal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Buyers Edge, Federal Hill– Opened at 1033 S. Charles St. in the former home of Curiosity.
Capital One, Mt. Clare Junction– Opened at the former Wells Fargo.
Carousel Cleaners, Pigtown– Opened at 788 Washington Blvd. in the former home of Gallery 788.
Citelighter, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
COR Fitness , Pigtown– Opened at 904 Washington Blvd. in a space that was previously vacant for multiple years.
dataFASCIA, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Elaine’s Brown Sugar, Locust Point– Opened at 1400 Towson St. in a space that was vacant for multiple years.
Felici Cafe, Federal Hill– Opened at 1035 Light St. in the former home of Trattoria Annamaria.
Focused Support, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Funk Federal Hill, Federal Hill– Opened at 900 Light St. in the former home of a Long and Foster Office. The space was previously vacant for more than a year.
Gridskippr, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
LinkPad, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Mi Ranchito, Hollins Market– Opened at 111 Hollins St. in a space that was vacant for multiple years.
No Limit Communications, Pigtown– Opened at 769 Washington Blvd. in the former home of ReVamp Variety and House of Elie.
OpiaTalk, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Out of the Blue Cafe, Locust Point–  Opened at 1442 E. Fort Ave, a space that was vacant for more than a year.
Petra Cafe, Federal Hill– Opened at 1038 Light St., the former home of Beach Bum’s.
Pigtown Deli Express, Pigtown– Opened at 804 Washington Blvd. in the former home of Pigtown Pharmacy.
Reify Health, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Riskive, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore and has since expanded to a larger space on the second floor.
Riverside Cafe, Riverside– Opened at 1401 Riverside Ave. in a space that was vacant for multiple years.
Roomtag, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
SmartLogic Solutions, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Smoothie King, Southside Marketplace– Opened in the shopping center’s suite 8 in the former space of a tanning salon. The space was previously vacant for more than a year.
Spiritas, Pigtown– Opened at 786 Washington Blvd. in a space that was vacant for multiple years.
Sprint Store, Southside Marketplace– Opened at the former space of Discount Cigarettes.
Stuggy’s, Federal Hill– Opened in part of the former M&T Bank at 17 E. Cross St. The space previously was vacant for more than a year.
Sushi Place, Riverside– Opened at 1400 Key Hwy. in the former space of the Fiesty Goat Pub. The space previously was vacant for more than a year.
Sweet Carolines, Locust Point– Opened at 1401 E. Clement St. in the former home of Pazza Luna which was closed for multiple years.
Technical.ly Baltimore, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
The Deck, Ridgely’s Delight– Opened at the 550 Washington Blvd. in the Hampton Inn. This is the first business at the space.
The Center for Translational Research, UM BioPark– Moved from Anne Arundel County into the UM BioPark. The space was previously vacant.
Thunderbolt Labs, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Total Health Care Pharmacy, Pigtown– Opened in a space at Bon Secours Clinic at 700 Washington Blvd.
Touchpoint Games, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
T-Squared Agency, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Twisted Lens Studio, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Uber Baltimore, Federal Hill– Opened in a space at Betamore.
Ultimate Style Barber Shop, Federal Hill– Opened at 1022 S. Charles St. in the former home of Bill Graves Shoe Repair.
World of Beer, McHenry Row– Opened at 1724 Whetstone Way. This is the first business at this address at McHenry Row.
Zella’s, Hollins Market– Reopened under their original ownership after being closed for more than a year.


Closed:

Beach Bum’s, Federal Hill– Closed, the space is now Petra Café.
Bobabooi’s Treasure Chest, Federal Hill- Closed, the space is now Vanessa’s Vintage Treasures.
Curiosity, Federal Hill– Closed, the space became Buyer’s Edge.
Discout Cigarettes, Southside Marketplace- Closed, the space become Sprint Store
Dirty Oars, Riverside– Opened and closed in 2013. Another business has not opened in the space.
Five Points Tavern, Locust Point– Closed, another business has not opened in the space.
Fund the Republic, Federal Hill– Opened at Betamore and closed in 2013.
House of Elie, Pigtown– Closed, the space is now No Limit Communications.
Joey B’s, Federal Hill– Closed, another business has not opened in the space.
Platfolio, Federal Hill- Opened at Betamore and closed in 2013.
Posh Retro, Federal Hill– Closed, another business has not opened in their former space.
Procurely, Federal Hill– Opened at Betamore and closed in 2013.
ReVamp Variety, Pigtown– Closed, the space became House of Elie and is now currently No Limit Communications.
Ruben’s Crepe’s, Federal Hill– Closed, another business has not opened in the space.
The Armoire, Federal Hill– Closed, the space is now Bmore Vapes.
The Hill, Federal Hill– Closed, the space became Joey B’s, which also closed.
The House, Locust Point– Opened and closed in 2013. The space has been purchased by the owners of Salt in Butchers Hill.
Thorntons Pub, Locust Point– Closed, another business has not opened in the space.
Tommy’s Downtown Tavern, Pigtown– Closed, another business has not opened in the space.
Trattoria Annamaria, Federal Hill– Closed, the space is now Felici’s Café.
Western Chicken Box, Federal Hill– Closed their Cross Street Market stand, another business has not opened in the space.

Moved:

Asurvest, Betamore– Opened and relocated to another Baltimore office.
Bill Graves Shoe Repair, Federal Hill– Moved into Dan Bros. Shoes and the space became Ultimate Barber Shop.
Bully Entertainment, Federal Hill– Moved from 1100 Marshall St. to a space in the Foundry at 921 E. Fort Ave.
Carnivore BBQ, Hollins Market– Opened and closed their space in the Hollins Market in 2013. They will be opening another stand at Cross Street Market.
Cockey’s, Hollins Market– They are opening a new restaurant in Upper Fells Point. Another business has not opened in the space.
Curiosity, Federal Hill– Relocated to Fells Point and the space at 1033 S. Charles St. is now Buyer’s Edge.
HarborQue, Locust Point– Relocated to Federal Hill at 1125 S. Charles St. in the former space of Kirby’s Szechuan. Their former space will be demolished for the 900 E. Fort Ave. development.
Parking Panda, Federal Hill– Moved from a space in 1111 Light Street to 1100 Marshall St. in the former space of Bully Entertainment, which moved into a space in the Foundry at 921 E. Fort Ave.
SpotKick, Betamore- Opened at Betamore and relocated to [email protected]
STAQ, Betamore– Opened at Betamore and relocated to Hampden.
Vanessa’s Vintage Treasures, Federal Hill– Moved from 1132 S. Charles. St. to 1028 S. Charles St. Another business has not opened in their former space.
Zelda Zen, Federal Hill– Moved to Fells Point. The former space at 46 E. Cross St. will become an Italian deli.

In summary, from the businesses listed above, 61 businesses opened (seven of which also closed in 2013), 21 businesses closed (seven of which also opened in 2013), and 12 businesses moved (six of which moved out of South Baltimore).  This nets out to a gain of 34 more businesses since the start of the 2013.
