Weekend Sports Attendance of 210,727 in Baltimore

The common saying on Memorial Day Weekend around Baltimore is, “everyone is at the beach.” However, this weekend there were a lot of people at stadiums as well. With three major sporting events going on in Baltimore this weekend, there were a lot of options for fans of baseball and lacrosse. The Orioles hosted the final three games of a four game series with the Cleveland Indians, the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Final Four was at M&T Bank Stadium, and the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Final Four was held just over the city line at Johnny Unitas Stadium at Towson University.

Last weekend Pimlico Race Course set an attendance record with 123,469 people at Preakness and this weekend an impressive 210,727 people total attended these three sporting events in Charm City. The Orioles sold a total of 114,124 tickets to its Friday, Saturday and Sunday games; the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Final Four attracted 78,234 fans to games on Saturday, Sunday and Monday; and, the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Final Four had 18,369 fans attend the two-day event at Towson University.

The Orioles are now averaging 30,595 fans per game on the season (to note, Sunday’s 37,649 attendance has not been added), which is 13th best in Major League Baseball. With the continuation of strong crowds, the Orioles have a great chance of returning to the top 10 in MLB attendance.

The NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Final Four was considered a disappointment with 78,234 fans, as this was the seventh consecutive year the event saw a decrease in attendance according to Inside Lacrosse. Many fans have pointed to ticket prices as a reason for the decline, although one would imagine that the presence of teams like Johns Hopkins or Loyola, or a championship appearance for Maryland, certainly would have led to larger totals. Many in the lacrosse industry are clamoring for changes in the three-day NFL stadium format.

Although the men’s event fell a bit short, the NCAA Women’s Final Four was a record-setting event. A record 10,113 fans attended Sunday might’s final featuring Maryland and Syracuse, with Maryland winning the title. Friday night’s semifinal match-ups attracted 8,256 fans, for a grand total 18,369 for the weekend. Attendance was certainly boosted by a local fan base for the University of Maryland and by US Lacrosse hosting a large girls lacrosse tournament in Bel Air.
