In honor of Earth Day, which took place this past Wednesday, 40 volunteers came together with the Ravens, the Lady Ravens Association, Parks & People and members of the Ravens All Community Team (ACT), including M&T Bank, Verizon, Constellation and The Baltimore Sun, to plant 35 trees in the Pigtown.
“We once again had the pleasure of working with Parks & People Foundation for our annual Earth Day event. It’s great to see so many volunteers from different organizations out in the community working to make Baltimore a cleaner and greener city,” said Ravens Community Relations Manager Emily Scerba.
The project is a part of a strategic heat island reduction plan by Parks & People in partnership with TreeBaltimore and Blue Water Baltimore. By increasing the number of trees along the streets of Pigtown over the next three years, the goal is to lower summertime temperatures and achieve energy and environmental benefits for its residents. Parks & People will continue to work closely with the citizens of Pigtown to support community stewardship and involvement in caring for the newly-planted trees until they are established, encouraging residents to see green projects as both achievable and rewarding.
Both the Ravens and Parks & People Foundation have held a relationship with Pigtown for many years, partnering on numerous projects that improve the area’s quality of life. Last year, the Ravens partnered with Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake to build 18 new rowhomes in the neighborhood, including three funded by the Ravens Foundation.
