Das Bier Haus Plans South Baltimore Expansion, Launches Catering
Das Bier Haus has been open for less than six months at 1542 Light St. in South Baltimore and owners Nate McKinney and Scott Bauer are already looking for ways to meet the strong demand at their restaurant. “The number one complaint we receive is that it’s too busy,” McKinney told SouthBMore.com.
The owners, who have been leasing the building, have a purchase agreement in place for the property. They are planning to expand to the second floor, an area that hasn’t been occupied in more than 10 years, according to McKinney. The expansion, which would approximately double the size of the current 2,700 sq. ft. restaurant, would include an additional dining room and bar. “It’s like creating another business,” said McKinney.
The owners are hoping to begin construction on the expansion this year and have already been in discussions with the South Baltimore Neighborhood Association (SBNA) about the plans.
Das Bier Haus also recently improved its air conditioning system, which has allowed the restaurant to keep the windows closed and limit the amount of noise that exits the building. The owners are also currently renovating the woodwork and signage on the exterior of the building, which will feature more black and yellow accents when completed. McKinney said they will also be adding more televisions in preparation for football season.
Das Bier Haus held its first block party this past weekend and is already planning its next one for Oktoberfest.
Chef Chad Novak and his kitchen staff will also be launching a new catering company called Das Bier Haus Catering. They will be offering items from the menu as well as more unique and creative items according to McKinney. They are hoping to cater festivals, parties, businesses, and the local Maryland German Association which has been a supporter of Das Bier Haus.
The catered food will be prepared at Das Bier Haus.
