The Local Fry Battles Orioles’ Adam Jones in Cooking Competition
On Wednesday, Federal Hill restaurant The Local Fry had a fun day as it went head-to-head against Orioles Center Fielder Adam Jones in the CareFirst Fan Challenge cooking competition. Highlights of the cook-off appeared on Mid-Atlantic Sports Network’s O’s Xtra, as well as other media outlets in the area.
The Local Fry, owned by Elizabeth and Kevin Irish, was selected for the competition after posting a picture of its loaded fry dishes using the hashtag #IChallengeAJ. Jones was looking for ballpark-themed dishes for this cooking challenge.
“The photo of the loaded French fries that Kevin and Elizabeth submitted looked pretty delicious, so it’s definitely going to be a challenging cook-off,” said Jones in a press release prior to the competition.
The cook-off took place at Dempsey’s Brew Pub & Restaurant at Oriole Park at Camden Yards and was judged by Chef Chad Gauss from The Food Market; 13-year-old Bryce Taylor, a Food Network Teen Chef and Junior Finalist from Food Network’s show Chopped Junior; and, Orioles Closer Zach Britton.
Elizabeth and Kevin Irish prepared The Local Fry’s Korean Short Rib Fries and Jamaican Jerk Chicken Fries. Jones prepared Carne Asada Fries, which he topped with steak, guacamole, sour cream, cheese, and hot sauce as a nod to the tacos and burritos from his hometown of San Diego.
The judges handed Jones the victory, but a great time was had by the Irish duo. “We were happy to show as many people as possible what The Local Fry is all about,” said Kevin Irish. “It was really fun interacting with Adam, Zach, Bryce, Chad, and all the media.”
Kevin Irish noted The Local Fry has been tagged on social media numerous times since the appearance and that he and Elizabeth have been recognized by people around Cross St. as a result of the cook-off. “It was great to reach out to a new audience, who we hope stop by the next time they are heading to a game.”
