‘Mystique Barrel Brewing and Lager House’ Coming to Pigtown

| January 24, 2024 | 0 Comments

Mystique Barrel Brewing and Lager House is coming to the former Suspended Brewing Company space at 912 Washington Blvd. in Pigtown. Mystique is a new business from beer industry veterans Tom Pagano, Les White, and Steve Marsh. They hope to open in June.

Suspended Brewing Company closed at the end of last year and announced it will relocate to North Baltimore. Suspended is taking its brewing equipment with them, but Mystique will take over the former brewery’s walk-in, draft system, CO2 regulation, and glycol chiller.

Mystique will have a similar layout to Suspended, but a new kitchen will be constructed in the back next to the brewing equipment. A cosmetic renovation will take place with new paint, murals and light fixtures, and televisions added for Ravens and Orioles viewing.

Mystique will partner with nearby distilleries, wineries, and farms to supply barrels, fruit, and other local ingredients to make its beers. The brewery has an “environmentally-mindful” goal of minimal waste via composting, recycling, repurposing material, and the use of clean energy.

Mystique will offer a variety of lagers, traditional ales, and mixed-culture beers. The name Mystique “evokes the process of mixed-culture barrel aging, which introduces the mysterious element of ever-evolving yeast and microorganisms that continuously develop complex subtle nuances over time.”

The kitchen will serve a variety of comfort foods and small bites. White said pulled pork will definitely be on the menu as a nod to Pigtown’s name and history.

Pagano, White, and Marsh’s vision for Mystique stems from their passion for quality beer. Pagano said in a press release, “We have a running joke between us that we make beer-flavored beer, and that is what you can expect from our main offerings.”

The owners love the history of the Pigtown neighborhood, as well as its diversity, and they are excited to be so close to the stadiums. They are also excited to join the South Baltimore Brewery District that is comprised of other Pigtown-area breweries Checkerspot Brewing Company, Wico Street Beer Co., and Pickett Brewing Companies. M8 Beer also opened as a new brewery in this area in recent months.
