Mother’s Federal Hill Grille announced today it is closing after 27 years of business in South Baltimore. The last day of operation will be January 19th before new owners take over the space.

Mother’s locations in Arnold and Timonium will remain open.

Mother’s and its Purple Patio became an iconic pre- and post-game stop for fans going Baltimore Ravens home games. The restaurant, which is open everyday for lunch and dinner, is known for its large menu with Baltimore and New Orleans food featuring appetizers, sandwiches, wings, entrees, weekend breakfast, homemade ice cream, and more. Its bar features a large selection of draft beers, crushes, and shooters, as well as mimosas and bloody marys on the weekends.

Prior to taking over the S. Charles St. space in 1997, Mother’s was the home of Muhly’s Bakery. Mother’s renovated and expanded several times over the years and has multiple spaces to host private parties. The interior features a main dining room and bar, an upstairs bar and dining room, and a large bar in the back of the building. Along with the Purple Patio, Mother’s has multiple outdoor seating areas.

Mother’s, along with bars such as Ropewalk and MaGerks, were instrumental in the rebirth of the bar scene in Federal Hill in the late 1990s and early 2000s

Mother’s owner Dave Rather was instrumental in planning the Federal Hill Jazz & Blues Festival, which took place in the community for many years. It was inspired by his love of New Orleans.

Rather’s spoke about the history of Mother’s and handling the COVID-19 pandemic as a restaurant owner in a 2021 episode of SouthBMore.com’s podcast.

Mother’s released the following statement:

After more than 27 incredible years in business, we have made the difficult decision to sell our Federal Hill location. While this chapter is closing, we are excited to look ahead to the next phase in Mother’s history, with the younger generation continuing to grow and expand the brand.

Our Arnold and Timonium locations remain open and we are actively exploring new opportunities for future locations.

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the amazing people of Baltimore and Federal Hill for their unwavering support and patronage over the years. Reflecting on the highlights, we are proud of all that we’ve accomplished together, including celebrating two Super Bowl wins on the streets outside, winning “Top Burger” in the state, being featured on the Today Show, earning national recognition as one of the top sports bars in the country, receiving multiple “Best of Baltimore” awards, and hosting countless Federal Hill festivals, New Year’s Eve parties, birthdays, weddings, and corporate events. Volo sports and kickball leagues, pajama and New Year’s Day brunches.

The Purple Patio!! It has taken on a life of its own. It’s been so fun to be a part of Ravens game day. We will miss it.

It has truly been a dream come true, and we feel incredibly blessed.

We would also like to extend a special thank you to the thousands of team members who have become like family over the years. Your hard work and dedication have been integral to our success, and we are forever grateful.

Our final day of business at this location will be Sunday January 19, 2025. We invite you to join us for one last drink or to enjoy your favorite menu item.

Baltimore City will always hold a special place in our hearts, and this location has been the flagship of our brand. While it is difficult to turn the page, we know it is the right decision for our family as we look ahead to the future.

With love and appreciation,

The Mother’s Family

The buyer, who has not been disclosed at this time, will renovate the property before opening a new concept in the space.
