Kevin Anderson of Locust Point and Mike Lopez of Federal Hill are launching the City vs. City 5K Run, a competition between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. that will take place on Saturday, October 4th. Baltimore runners will complete a course at Druid Hill Park while DC runners will simultaneously complete a course at Rock Creek Park. Every runner’s time counts toward an average time to crown the winning city. Runners can also team up to challenge another group from the opposite city.
A post-race party will be held at Mad River in Federal Hill to announce the winners and Anderson and Lopez are currently looking for a spot in DC to do the same. City vs. City has partnered with four charities for each city, including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Living Classrooms, Baltimore Child Abuse Center, and Dr. Q’s Quest on Baltimore’s behalf. A portion of the proceeds from the race will support the charities. Runners and their supporters will also be able to raise money for the charity of their choice on each runner’s profile page.
This is the second race organized by Anderson and Lopez as each of the last two Aprils they hosted a 5K to benefit Dr. Q’s Quest at Patterson Park. Dr. Q’s Quest benefits brain cancer research, which is very special to Anderson and Lopez since losing their good friend John Petrovick to the disease. Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa, for which Dr. Q’s Quest is named, was Petrovick’s neuroscientist and neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Both Anderson and Lopez are experienced runners and hope to plan more regional competitions in the future.
