Avoiding meat? Or opting for a pescetarian diet this time a year (or all the time)? Here are some great dishes SouthBMore.com’s team has had lately around South Baltimore.

Calamari from Shoyou Sushi

photoIf you’ve lived in Baltimore for more than a year, and like seafood, you’ve had calamari. It’s one of the foods that is always grouped in with Baltimore seafood favorites and there are countless places that do it well. We are big fans of Shoyou Sushi at SouthBMore.com and could go on and on about the many great dishes served up by chef and owner Bruce and his crew.

Shoyou’s calamari is a unique take on this popular dish. Tempura style, covered in Shoyou’s delicious sauces, topped with tobiko, and placed atop a plate of fresh greens – it was a hit and a dish that will definitely be ordered again.

Tortellini tre Salsa from Brendali

Pasta is a great way to avoid meat and there are many great options at Brendali. One of these dishes is the Tortellini tre Salsa, Brendali’s cheese tortellini sautéed in a blend of marinara, alfredo and pesto sauce. It had great flavor and is a good choice, especially if you can’t figure out what type of sauce you are in the mood for that day.

HomeSlyce Classic from HomeSlyce

There is a lot of great pizza around Baltimore, but few pies are more unique than the HomeSlyce Classic at HomeSlyce. Bursting with flavors, this pie includes goat and mozzarella cheese, walnuts, eggplant, spinach, caramelized onions, roasted peppers and the signature HomeSlyce sauce. Spicy, sweet and cooked just right, this is a favorite at HomeSlyce (though there are many).

Garlic Shrimp from Sun Hing

Sun Hing has a lot of options if you are looking for seafood or to avoid meat and many of the dishes with shrimp are very good. The Garlic Shrimp is a favorite. The shrimp are coated with a spicy, garlic sauce and served with mixed vegetables and rice.

Crispy Octopus from 1157 Bar + Kitchen

From its tuna crudo to its cheese board, this cozy Locust Point restaurant has some delicious ‘Lent-friendly’ options. One small plate definitely worth trying is the crispy octopus. Grilled to perfection, the octopus sits atop a flavorful chickpea salad. It’s a great plate to share or to start off your meal (…pair it with one of 1157’s signature cocktails and you won’t be disappointed.)
