Phillips Cutting Locust Point Plant

You never like to hear about job cuts and it appears that the closing of the Phillips manufacturing and distribution facility will hit home for many South Baltimore residents.  Baltimore Business Journal is reporting that the closure will result in the loss of 100 local jobs.  SouthBMore.com reported this from the Locust Point Civic Association’s March meeting:

The headquarter of Phillips Seafood on Fort Ave. will be moving their offices from the front of their complex to a back building currently used for storage.  Phillips is putting their front building up for lease and hoping to attract a new business.  The building is already zoned for offices, but the community did voice concern over a potential zoning change at the location.

Here is a statement from Phillips from the BBJ Article:

“We moved into our current plant in 2002 in hopes of growing our company, but given the difficult economic conditions and industry dynamics, we have not grown as we anticipated,” Phillips spokeswoman Caroline Tippett said in a statement. “Our Baltimore plant is simply too big, and we don’t have the capacity to fill the space.”

So it appears the changes will affect many jobs. We will keep an eye on what they do with the space.  The facility is right next door to McHenry Row and every inch of South Baltimore property has become prime real estate for redevelopment lately.

Nice Looking Trailer for 1901 South Charles Street

Two months ago Jon Mayers of Chesapeake Realty Partners came to the SBNA meeting looking for approval for a leasing trailer across the street at 1900 S. Charles St.  This is the spot of the Thompson Pratt Co. warehouse, which doesn’t have the greatest curb appeal, so there wasn’t much resistance from SBNA to add the trailer to the site.  The trailer is now installed and is a nice improvement to the site.  They have landscaped the area around it and added a wood ramp leading up to the trailer – it definitely looks better than anything that has ever been at 1900 S. Charles St.  Chesapeake is also lobbying to get the Charm City Circulator down to Wells St… we hope they are successful!
