Superfresh Supermarket has opened at 1205 W. Pratt St. at the Mount Clare Junction shopping center in Pigtown. Superfresh took over the 40,000 sq. ft. retail space from Jumbo Fresh in September.
Superfresh was a popular grocery store brand in the Baltimore area in the past and is making its return to the area with this new store. Key Food took over ownership of the brand in 2016 after its former owner A&P filed for bankruptcy in 2015.
Superfresh now has more than 20 locations, mostly in New York and New Jersey.
The Mount Clare Junction grocery store space has seen many concepts over the years, including Price Rite and Safeway, prior to Jumbo Fresh.
SouthBMore.com was given a tour of the Superfresh store by Bif Browning, an economic development and business consultant working on the project in coordination with Carlyle Next, the owner of Mount Clare Junction.
Superfresh has kept a similar layout to Jumbo Fresh, but expanded some sections and brought in many new products.
Browning noted Superfresh has a wide selection of international foods and one of the “widest selections of produce” around.
“Superfresh looks to serve the needs of the entire community from residents who grew up in the area to more-recent transplants to the area, including the growing international populations from East and West Africa, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia,” said Browning.
Superfresh has a large selection of fruits and vegetables, including many different types of mangoes, starches, bananas, greens, and more.
The store also includes a large selection of fresh fish. Customers can also order items at the counter from butcher and deli, and a bakery counter is coming soon. Baked goods include local breads from Marantos Bakery, as well as Hispanic baked goods.
On the shelves there are American staples, a wide variety of rice, sodas from all over the world, sauces for many cuisines, and frozen foods from various countries.
Browning noted Superfresh is on Instacart.
Superfresh is open every day from 8am to 8pm.
