10329248_758897530816482_8801469882824004172_nOn Saturday, May 10th, SouthBMore.com organized a cleanup of the Swann Park shoreline in South Baltimore. The shoreline was littered with trash including thousands of bottles, bags of chips, Styrofoam waste, and more. SouthBMore.com was joined by more than 20 volunteers including the SBNA Teen Council, Zero Litter, Jamie Webster of Baltimore Beach Volleyball, District 46 Delegate candidate Liam Davis, and many dedicated volunteers from the South Baltimore Street Cleaning Group. A big THANK YOU to everyone who participated!

After more than two hours of cleaning, 46 bags of trash were removed from the shoreline. This was a major improvement and a great step toward improving one of South Baltimore’s waterfront spaces. There is still a lot of trash along the shoreline that was out of reach, however discussions have emerged about doing a canoe cleanup in the near future… stay tuned!

Many of the problems in the Middle Branch are caused by the runoff from the Gwynns Falls, which begin in Reisterstown and flow southeast into the Middle Branch, much of which is underground. A trash wheel was recently installed at the base of the Jones Falls before the Inner Harbor, and a similar device at the base of the Gwynns Falls would go a long way to keeping the Middle Branch and its shorelines clean. The shoreline can be seen behind Horseshoe Baltimore and BARCS, along the Westport Waterfront, and along west Port Covington and Middle Branch Park.
