The Southside Marketplace Rite Aid is now a Walgreens

The Rite Aid at Southside Marketplace in Riverside/Locust Point is now a Walgreens. The Rite Aid’s pharmacy became a Walgreens pharmacy in March of last year and the entire store became a Walgreens in recent days.

Over the least few years, Walgreens acquired 1,932 Rite Aid Locations and the stores have been rebranded to Walgreens in phases. Rite Aid employees became Walgreens employees after the acquisitions. Over the past year and a half, the Rite Aid at Southside Marketplace was owned by Walgreens as the transition was taking place.

A new Walgreens sign replaced the Rite Aid sign at Southside Marketplace in recent days, and the store now carries Walgreens branded items. The layout of the store remains mostly the same. A Walgreens photo center is being added to this location.

Walgreens signed a long-term lease to open a location a couple blocks away on the first floor of Riverside Wharf at 1420 Key Hwy. in Riverside in 2013, but never opened the location amid Walgreens’ attempts to acquire Rite Aid. Walgreens continues to pay the lease on the space and has attempted to sublease it. Walgreens did not respond to requests for comment about this space.
