Ten Recommendations for a Nice Day in South Baltimore

Update:  Posted last year, but hopefully very relevant today!

We’ve experienced some really nice weather so far this spring with April feeling a lot more like June on many days.  With South Baltimore being such a great place to spend a beautiful day, let’s talk about some of our favorite things to do.  Here are ten recommendations (in no particular order!)

1.  Catch a Game at the Yard:  We are lucky to have the most beautifully built modern baseball park in the nation right here in South Baltimore.  There’s never a bad time to catch a game, especially if the O’s keep winning.  Get the whole experience by taking in Sports Legends or The Babe Ruth Museum. Also make sure to stop by at Pratt Street Ale House, Pickles or Sliders before or after the game.

2.  Have a Picnic at Federal Hill Park:  Well you don’t really have to have a full picnic, but grabbing some to-go food and sitting on one of the benches overlooking downtown and the Inner Harbor never gets old – it’s one of the best views around.  I recommend bringing Sam’s Bagels for breakfast, Elvis for lunch and Afters for dessert.

3.  Get Your Barge On:  There are few Baltimore settings I’ve ever experienced like the Tiki Barge.  It has the vibe of Key West and the view of a harbor cruise, yet you are still in the middle of the city.  If you don’t like the big crowds on the weekends, definitely check out the laid back atmosphere during the week. Don’t forget to drool over the incredible pier homes lining the entrance!

4.  Events in the Park:  There is no lack of great parks in South Baltimore and there is always many great events to attend.  If you love movies, definitely check out Flicks on the Hill, which is an outdoor movie against the American Visionary Arts Museum on a Thursday night.  Riverside Park also has many concerts on Sunday evenings – bring your dogs, kids, and a bottle of wine.

5.  Grab an Outdoor Table:  Dining outside is definitely is a great way to take in South Baltimore.  Some of the best patios around can be enjoyed at Ryleigh’s, Mother’s, C&R Pub, Regi’s, Thai Arroy, Nick’s Fish House, Hersh’s, Miguel’s and newcomer Home Slyce.

6.  Have a Mojito with Reggae:  Little Havana is a great place to go as long you are not in the mood for stress.  The music is laid back, the mojitos hit the spot and there is always space to stretch out.  I recommend the Cuban sandwich and chicken nachos.

7.  Take a Ride on the Water Taxi:  “We can see Fells Point, but it takes so long to get there.”  Avoid the traffic and detour and get to Fells Point, Canton or the Inner Harbor with a ride on the Water Taxi.

8.  Pretend you are a Tourist:  Though the Inner Harbor is usually filled with tourists, there still are some pretty fun things to do while taking in the terrific scenery.  Play mind games at the Science Center, check out a dolphin show at the Aquarium and race your friends on the paddle boats.

9.  Take a Bike Ride:  South Baltimore has two great bike trails.  There is the Gwynns Falls Trail, which is a 15 mile path taking you through Dickeyville and Middle Branch and past the Ravens Stadium.  You can also ride the waterfront promenade all the way from Locust Point to the end of Canton.

10.  Go Play:  South Baltimore has some great options for any athlete looking to get in a game.  Play some volleyball at Rash Field, get in a round at Carroll Park Golf Course, swing a tennis racket at Latrobe, shoot the basketball at Riverside Park, toss a softball or baseball at Swann Park and get involved in any game you can imagine on the full-size fields around South Baltimore.

Other favorite outdoor activities? Let us know! (Hopefully this post doesn’t jinx all this great weather!)
