The Urban Children Foundation Release:
On July 3, The Urban Children Foundation, a Baltimore-based non-profit organization that helps Baltimore City children access extracurricular activities, will host the inaugural Urban Children Foundation One-Miler run/walk race. Taking place on the grounds of historic Fort McHenry, the race is the only competitive one-mile road race in the city.
The race benefits The Urban Children Foundation (UCF), which is dedicated to ensuring every Baltimore City child can access, participate and experience an extracurricular activity. In the last year, UCF helped over 800 kids in Baltimore City-based organizations purchase items like transportation to a national championship in Orlando, Florida, uniforms embroidered for a drum major team, and registration fees for golfing programs.
UCF was founded in 2009 by Robin Truiett-Theodorson, who was inspired to honor her late husband Mark Theodorson’s passion for the arts and commitment to urban communities.
“I’m so happy that UCF can bring this event into being,” says Truiett-Theodorson, who also serves as UCF’s executive director. “The One-Miler is accessible to any person of any age, and it will truly be a community event of Baltimoreans. This will provide more funding for our main goal – to give more Baltimore City children the chance to experience many different types of extracurricular activities. And, we hope that it can bring the community together for a one-of-a-kind running event at Fort McHenry.”
The flat course will take runners through the beautiful grounds of Fort McHenry in Locust Point, featuring great views of the Baltimore Harbor. The race will award prizes to winners in many age groups and there are prizes for the top three “Clydesdale” and “Athenas” divisions.
The race start is at 8 a.m. at Fort McHenry. Registration for the race is $20 until July 2. Race Day registration is $25. Register online at www.urbanchildren.org/onemiler.html.
