Getting Twisted: Great Pretzels in South Baltimore!

As you can read in my bio, I am a big fan of bar food and pretzels just may be my favorite snack. Whether they are soft or hard, large or small, braded or twisted, covered in chocolate, or used as a sandwich bun, I am down with all things pretzel.  Anyone who has lived with me before will tell you that I have a bag of Rold Gold pretzels in the house almost all the time.  Being such a big fan of pretzels, there is a great chance I am going to try them if they are on a menu.  Let’s take a look at some great pretzels in South Balimore.

Barfly’s

If you’ve been to Barfly’s, chances are you had one of their pizzas and really enjoyed it.  While Barfly’s sandwiches, pizzas and salads are some of the best in the area, you have to try their soft pretzels the next time you visit the Riverside bar.  For just $4 you get two hearty Bavarian-style pretzels that come out hot and fresh.  These salted pretzels are  delicious and don’t need a condiment to be enjoyed, but they come with a truly unique mustard.  This tasty dijon mustard has the potency of wasabi, so dip just a little bit of your pretzel in there and enjoy.  These two pretzels are a filling appetizer that go terrific with the rest of their dinner items as well as their large offering of craft beers.

Leinenkugel’s Beer Garden

Leinenkugel’s Beer Garden is a great and relatively new addition to Power Plant Live! that features a large collection of draft beers, picnic tables, hightops with kegs in them and a retractable dome-type window enclosure that always gives that outdoor feeling.  While you are there, you have to get their pretzels that come as a small or large platter.  These large stick-style pretzels are very soft and come with a delicious beer cheese as well as honey mustard.  Next time I go there, I think I’ll get the large and not share with anyone.

Delia Foley’s

Delia Foley’s took over the former location of Fort Charles Pub – and then Taps – and did an incredibly inviting and improved renovation of the outside of the bar at one of South Baltimore’s busiest corners.  The inside has an authentic Irish feel and their menu is filled with great bar food items that go great with an Irish, English or American draft.  After trying their award winning Wings of Destiny, it is hard to go in there and order anything else, but when I saw they had soft pretzel nuggets, I had no other choice but to try them.

Not sure how many nuggets were in the serving, but after ordering an order of wings and curly fries with the pretzels for two of us, we had way too much food.  The $ 5.99 order of pretzel bites filled their basket to the top (we also opted for the Irish cheese sauce for $.75 over the Jameson spicy mustard.)  The bites were very good and dipping them in the cheese made them an ideal appetizer.  The curly fries were also piled higher than the basket.  Next time we order those three items, we’ll have to make sure there is more of us to help finish.

Wine Market

Last time I went to the Wine Market they had a dessert that was a deconstructed chocolate pretzel.  Chocolate pretzels are a favorite dessert of mine, so this was an amazing finish to a great meal.  We talked about this dessert for days afterwards and even got another To-Go order several weeks later. Not sure if Wine Market still makes this amazing pretzel dessert or has it everyday, but they should!

MaGerks

MaGerks has always been a favorite place of mine to grab a sandwich, appetizer, wings or sushi.  With a Philadelphia inspiration to their bar, it’s only expected that they involve the pretzel.  If you’ve lived in Baltimore for at least a year, chances are you’ve had a crab pretzel, so let me just say – MaGerks crab pretzel is as good as, if not better than, any I’ve had in Baltimore.

A new addition to their menu, or at least something I didn’t know about until recently, is also their pretzel rolls, which you can add to any of their sandwiches. Last time I threw one on their hot roast beef and it hit the spot.

Hope this gives you a good guideline for some good pretzel eating in South Baltimore. Please let me know if there are any pretzel spots that I haven’t tried yet!
