The Replacement of the Light Street Water Infrastructure is complete and paving begins
Public Works Director Alfred H. Foxx today announced that the water infrastructure renewal work on Light Street between Baltimore Street and Lombard Street has been completed.
When a 20-inch water main broke on Light St. on July 16 it was decided that a proactive and fiscally responsible approach was best. Therefore a multi-block, total-main replacement was undertaken, rather than installing one section of new pipe onto a 19th century water line. A parallel, century-old, 10-inch main was also replaced while the street was opened, as well as a 12-inch main along Redwood Street. New large water service connections were also being installed.
DPW worked in coordination with other utilities, which are also upgraded and repaired their lines along the same path. This new water infrastructure replacement is in full operation and temporary mains have been disconnected. These new pipes reduce the likelihood of water main breaks for decades to come. New valves and new fire hydrants are also part of this totally new water infrastructure.
“We want to thank all of the surrounding business, residents, and commuters for their patience during the Light Street water main construction,” said Director Foxx. “Although it took more time, we truly believe a holistic approach was the better solution for the repair.”
Repaving of the roadway will begin this week. It is anticipated that the road will reopen by August 20, 2012. This two-block section of Light Street remains closed but the sidewalks are open and the businesses are easily accessible.
