Launches Its 2013 Weed Pulling Competition

| April 25, 2013 | 0 Comments

It’s back! Once again it is bad news for the weeds of South Baltimore as and our gang of weed pullers will fill the streets of SoBo on Saturday, May 18th from 9am-2pm to show those weeds who’s boss!

The rules are simple and are as follows:

-Put together a team of weed pullers – any desired amount of people works, whether it be a one-person wrecking crew or a large group.

-Pull as many weeds as possible from the streets, sidewalks, alleys and public spaces of South Baltimore.

-Give Kevin Lynch a call (410-533-2990), so he can arrange for to weigh your weeds.  Weeds can be dropped off at a dumpster at Thomas Johnson or can be arranged for a pickup.

-The three teams that pull the most pounds of weeds will win a gift certificate to Ryleigh’s Oyster:

  • $100 gift certificate to Ryleigh’s for 1st place!  Plus a Maryland state flag that flew over the State House from Delegate Brian McHale!
  • $75 gift certificate to Ryleigh’s for 2nd place!
  • $50 gift certificate to Ryleigh’s 3rd place!

– Meet at No Idea Tavern at 3pm to find out who won and meet your fellow good neighbors!  All participants get $2 domestic bottles.

This will be the second annual Weed Pulling Competiton as the inaugural event was a great success despite 100 degree heat, a mini hurricane the night before and power outages throughout South Baltimore.  In 2012 the competition yielded approximately 900lbs of weeds filling 44 yard bags.  Last year’s winner, Citizens of Pigtown, set the record with 364lbs of weeds in 17 bags as they cleared Lot O on Ostend St. Can your team set the new record?  We’d love to see you try!

If you are putting together a team, please email Kevin at ahead of time so we can get a good estimate of the amount supplies and volunteers needed.

This year we will be partnering with One Piece South Baltimore, which is a great new cleaning initiative on the South Peninsula. They are raising awareness on the impact of trash and litter on our environment and encouraging people to clean South Baltimore ‘One Piece’ at a time. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter to stay on top of all the great things they are doing!

If you would like to volunteer to help with pickups, we’d love some help – especially if you have a pickup truck! Also, if any restaurants or businesses would like to donate additional prizes, please contact Kevin directly.
