LIGHT STREET IS OPEN
NEW WATER LINES, NEW HYDRANTS, NEW STREET
Public Works Director Alfred H. Foxx today announced that Light St. between Lombard St. and Baltimore St. is open following water infrastructure renewal work.
When a 20-inch water main broke on Light St. on July 16 it was decided that a holistic, proactive and fiscally responsible, multi-block, total-main replacement would be undertaken, rather than installing one section of new pipe onto a 19th century water line. A parallel, century-old, 10-inch main would also be replaced while the street was opened, as would as a 12-inch main along Redwood Street. New large water service connections would also being installed.
DPW worked in coordination with other utilities, which also upgraded and repaired their lines. This new water infrastructure will reduce the likelihood of water main breaks for decades to come. Replacement included 570 linear feet of 20-inch main and 378 linear feet of 10 inch main in Light St. A 90 foot section of 12-inch main along Redwood St. was also put in place along with 175 feet of new water service line connections. Ten new valves and two new fire hydrants are also part of this totally new water infrastructure.
Repaving of the roadway began immediately after the lines were in place and was rapidly completed over the past week. Director Foxx stated: “I want to thank everyone for their cooperation and patience while DPW undertook this extensive construction project. Patching an old water main was not a legitimate option, and the Bureau of Water and Wastewater did a remarkable job in working to ensure that this was completed as rapidly as possible.”
