Restaurant Shinkansen Sushi has signed a 3,138 sq. ft. lease at the Rye House apartment building in Baltimore Peninsula. The business is the latest concept from Maryland restauranteur David Chen.
Chen also owns ‘Akira Ramen & Izakaya’ which has several locations in the Baltimore area, including one in Canton; Japanese restaurant ‘IZAKAYA 68’ in Hunt Valley; and Korean BBQ restaurant ‘Volcano’ in Owings Mills..
The menu at Shinkansen Sushi will feature a wide selection of sushi and maki rolls, including classics and specialty creations, as well as Japanese street food-inspired appetizers like karaage and skewers. The beverage menu will include Japanese beers, sake, and soju.
The dining experience at Shinkansen Sushi will feature “mini bullet trains” which will deliver sushi dishes directly to customers’ tables via a conveyor belt system. Chen has used robot servers at some of his other restaurants.
The walls will be filled with murals of “Japanese natural scenery.”
“My family has been a part of the Baltimore community for decades, so we’re thrilled to bring our newest concept to Baltimore Peninsula,” said Chen in a press release. “We’ve seen firsthand the incredible loyalty of Baltimore customers, and we’re excited to offer them a fresh and innovative sushi experience unlike anything else in the area.”
The Baltimore Peninsula development team, led by MAG Partners and MacFarlane Partners, with investments from Kevin Plank and his Sagamore Ventures investment firm and Goldman Sachs Asset Management Urban Investment Group, said this lease brings the retail program at the development to 62 percent leased. Baltimore Peninsula opened five new buildings with a mix of uses in 2023.
Shinkansen Sushi will join Ben & Jerry’s, Chinese restaurant Slurp Noodle Bar, salon Inspire Nail Bar, and Jamaican restaurant Blü Cā at Rye House.
Already open at Baltimore Peninsula is Rye Street Market, Slutty Vegan, Bar Vegan, Little Wing, Vessel, and Jersey Mike’s. Coming soon to the development, in addition to Shinkansen Sushi, is Urbano, Live-K, BK Lobster, Slurp Noodle Bar, Blü Cā, Daily Grind, and a multi-vendor space called The Exchange.
