Chesapeake Craft Brewers Continues Its Search for a Home

photoChesapeake Craft Brewers, the group that was once eyeing a move to the Pabst Castle at 1834 S. Charles St. for a production brewery and brewpub, is still searching for a home. Led by South Baltimore residents Spike Owen and Mike McDonald, Chesapeake Craft Brewers began looking for a new space after deciding last year that the castle would not give them enough room to grow their operations. Now, the Pabst Castle is currently under contract for use as office space.

Over the last six to eight months, Chesapeake Craft Brewers was focused on a move to 101 Dickman St. in West Covington, but a deal to purchase the building fell through at the “11.5th hour.” The group is now on an accelerated schedule to find a new home in the very near future and is focusing on four to five properties – while always keeping an eye out for new opportunities.

While they lost some valuable time pursuing 101 Dickman St., Chesapeake Craft Brewers is keeping focused. “We are staying positive, the beer business isn’t going anywhere,” said Owen.

Chesapeake Craft Brewers is hoping to stay in South Baltimore, but may have to extend their search to the surrounding counties as well. Owen told SouthBMore.com that Horseshoe Casino is driving up the price of South Baltimore warehouse space.

Chesapeake Craft Brewers is looking for about 8,000-10,000 sq. ft. of building space near a highway. They hope to purchase a property but, if they lease, the space needs to be easily able to convert into a brewery.

“We are focused on a production brewery at this point,” said Owen. “Depending on location, a tap room could add some additional marketing and revenue, but we will not be having an attached restaurant.”

When open, Chesapeake Craft Brewers will operate under the name Key Brewery.
