Francis Scott Key Elementary/Middle School’s Destination Imagination team “America Runs on Munchkins” captured the Maryland State Championship on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at UMBC. This victory earned the team a spot at the Global Tournament in Kansas City, May 22-25.

The team, comprised of seven students, competed against ten other teams from across Maryland. Francis Scott Key was the only Baltimore City Public School to advance to the state competition and the only city public school to place at the tournament.

“America Runs on Munchkins” previously won the Regional Tournament on February 22, competing in the Technical Challenge called “Breaking Point,” where they designed and built equipment to create and destroy a tower while presenting a creative story.

Team members Henry Kearns, Coraline Robinson, Henry Dugan, William Lanham, Zachary Lanham, John Kraft, and Clare Bowen impressed judges with their innovative solutions and theatrical presentation.

“These students showcase the incredible talent and creativity within Baltimore City Public Schools,” said team coaches Rob Kearns and Kyle Robinson. “Their achievement demonstrates what our city’s children can accomplish with dedication and support.”

The team is coached by Kearns and Robinson, with support from FSK teacher Ms. Felicity Ross, who serves as School Liaison and BCPS Gifted and Advanced Learning Coordinator for FSK. FSK parent Lincoln Carpenter provides additional support as a Regional and State Appraiser.

Destination Imagination is a global educational program that challenges students to apply science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) skills to solve open-ended challenges. Team solutions must be entirely created by students without adult assistance.

The team will now represent Baltimore City and Maryland, competing against teams from across the United States and 30 countries.
