The Federal Hill neighborhood is now home is to the Downtown Baltimore JCC (DBJCC) Parenting Center. The center offers a myriad of resources and activities for South Baltimore families.

The JCC has a long history of supporting families and has two other parenting centers in Owings Mills and Park Heights. Recently, the staff noted that more and more families were staying in the city and that there was a real need for a new center downtown. After renting space throughout the city for more than two years, the JCC chose Federal Hill for its permanent center because of the growing population of stay-at-home or work-at-home parents in this neighborhood. Kim Jacobsohn, Downtown Baltimore Family Program Coordinator, said that the search for the perfect location was lengthy, but they were finally able to find a spot with ample parking, stroller access and easy accessibility for families in other neighborhoods.

The parenting center includes a main playroom with a playhouse, grocery, theater and kitchen. There is also a sensory room with hands-on toys and a center activity that changes frequently. A baby room is available for children under 12 months. There is also a snack room, classroom and kitchen. On select days a simple art project will be set up in the snack room. Future plans include a riding cars raceway around the hallway of the center.

“We have received a great response from the community,” said Jacobsohn. “We have already exceeded our membership goals!”

The DBJCC Parenting Center will be having a grand opening celebration March 17 through 22 with many activities for parents and children. Spring baby and toddler classes will begin April 7. Details about the opening celebration and classes can be found on their website. “The center is community driven and we hope there is something for everyone,” said Jacobsohn.

The DBJCC Parenting Center is located at:

1118 Light St., Suite D
Baltimore, MD
